What is a Truck Winch?
A truck winch (also known as a cargo winch or web winch) is the mechanical tensioning device mounted along the side rails of flatbed trailers. It is the anchor point used to secure cargo straps (webbing) over a load.

How It Works
The winch consists of a U-shaped frame and a rotating spool (mandrel). The driver feeds the nylon strap through the slot in the spool and uses a winch bar to rotate the capstan. A ratchet pawl or locking mechanism engages the gear teeth to prevent the winch from unwinding, maintaining tension on the load during transit.

Common Types of Truck Winches

• Weld-On Winches: Permanently welded to the trailer frame. These are immovable, meaning the driver must position the cargo to align with the winch.
• Sliding (Track) Winches: These sit inside a specific “C-channel” or track running the length of the trailer. They can slide forward or backward to align perfectly with the cargo, offering maximum versatility.
• Bolt-On Winches: Portable winches that can be bolted onto the trailer frame where needed, often used for retrofitting older trailers.

Importance in Logistics
The truck winch is the heart of the “tie-down” system. Without a properly functioning winch, a driver cannot achieve the Working Load Limit (WLL) required by the Department of Transportation (DOT). Regular maintenance—specifically greasing the pawl and checking the mandrel for burrs—is vital to prevent strap cuts and mechanism failure.
